2009 Honda CRF450R

September 23rd, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Editorial, Stories

We try to stay focused on off-road here at DailyRoost, but the 2009 Honda CRF450R seems too good to pass up.  No doubt you’ve heard all about the new Honda already, but I wanted to offer a little commentary on it that you may not have seen elsewhere.

Aprilia’s 2009 RXVs

September 22nd, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Stories

Aprilia has just announced its 2009 RXV lineup.  Obvious changes for 2009 include a new, traditional-design swingarm.  It’s good to see they’re not going to continue milking their initial design.  If they can increase reliability, decrease weight, and make the motor more tractable, they’ll have a winner on their hands.   Most riders agree that the earlier models were way overpowered and a bit too heavy.

2009 Husabergs: I think we’re in for a treat!

Husaberg

Australasian Dirt Bike Magazine’s preview of the 2009 Husaberg FE450 and FE570 is extremely postitive.  They’ve gone so far as to say that:

“Overall, the FE450 and FE570 are serious title contenders for their overall class crowns – and I don’t normally say that until I’ve ridden others back to back! They are that good.”

Here’s the bad news: word on the street is that they are going to be California Red Sticker bikes.  Come on, Husaberg and KTM - you can do better than that.  Leave it to the racers to tune the fuel injection and exhaust, but give us a Green Sticker bike.

I wish there was more of this type of filmmaking going on these days. I’m growing tired of tattoos, heavy metal, backflips and energy drink culture.

AMA Pro MX and SX to follow new sound guidelines

July 22nd, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Editorial, Stories

Cycle News is reporting that the AMA and the FIM have mandated a 94dBA sound level for all bikes competing in the 2009 Supercross and Motocross series.  This is great news for the sport.

And since consumers follow the trends of the factory racing bikes, this will likely mean that the general public will likely follow suit.  We will make fewer enemies on the trail and near the tracks when people quiet their bikes, and that will translate into fewer tracks and trails getting shut down.

Let me paraphrase: if you ride a loud bike, don’t be surprised if all your favorite riding spots get shut down.  Be responsible, and people will reward you.

Fuel Injection becomes mainstream in 2009

June 24th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Stories

Kawasaki has announced its KX-F lineup for 2009, and the new 450 will be fuel injected.  So now Suzuki, Kawasaki, Husqvarna, Sherco, BMW and Husaberg are all confirmed to have fuel injected off-road bikes for 2009.  It’s expected that the 2009 Hondas will be fuel injected as well, since nearly everyone thought they would be for 2008.

The great news here is that it may not be unrealistic to see more California Green Sticker motocross bikes if the manufacturers can also keep noise levels down (The Husqvarnas TCs already are, even though they’re still carbureted).  And, getting the EPA and DMV to approve bikes for street use will only be easier if the manufacturers can dial in the fuel injection to keep emissions as low as possible.

Here’s to more green sticker and street-legal bikes!
